Impractical Jokers: TV Prank

Comedy Central needed two April Fool’s promos for Impractical Jokers. The ask? Make viewers believe their television was glitching… until it wasn’t. The concept hinged on fooling the audience without making the trick obvious.| Spoiler alert: Viewers really thought their TV was broken.

THE CHALLENGE

How do you prank a country without inviting potential lawsuits? You make viewers believe that their TVs broke down in the middle of viewing their favourite shows.

Sound easier said than done. In reality, the visuals and audio needs to be EXTREMELY convincing from the get-go; otherwise the prank would be busted the moment the audience gets suspicious. I thought to myself "What are the most annoying things that could happen during a viewing experience?" My brain had a field-day. Buffering rings, lags, audio jumps, stutters, dropped resolutions, etc etc etc.

Then my next thought was "Hmm, I should try to replicate as much as I can in the promo." So I set forth to create the most annoying promo for the Comedy Central audience.
I had fun though. *laughs maniacally*
