THE CHALLENGE

How do you compress and communicate the effects of 6 decades into a 14min documentary? This documentary will be published on Youtube, so how will this doc compete amongst the best channels on the platform?
I got lost in all the possible ways I could approach this. I threw myself into the research and reference phase - I watched as many documentaries as I could from Youtube's best. I'm talking about Vox, Fern, SWOOP, Visual Venture and a little bit of Patrick CC. Once I felt sure in the creative direction, I went on to cut the documentary beat-by-beat before presenting the full edit to Post Producers, Ellie and JC. With their help and feedback, we were able to craft an impactful, historically informative documentary that packs an emotional punch. I consider this piece one of my proudest works.

MY ROLE

• Sourced archive and b-roll from stock libraries that speak to 1995's historical accuracy

• Presented story beats based on the approved paper edit script from the Seen.tv team

• Worked closely with Exec Producers to apply feedback from Oxfam/Al Jazeera

• Devised creative solutions in edit for any complex story beats

• After picture lock, I mixed and mastered the audio for online audiences

• Colourgraded the piece to ensure that colour appears consistent in between shots

THE GOAL

To produce a powerful social documentary that encourages viewers to reflect on the past and present. There were moments whilst working on this doccie where I felt helpless in seeing the atrocities happening in the world right now. If there is a message I want the viewer to take away from this piece, it is to be kind to your neighbours and be grateful for the safety you live in.

WHAT I LEARNED

There should never be shame in fighting for justice. Whether if it's for you, your family or your neighbours. Cruelty in the minds of tyrants is seen as justice - learn to understand the difference and consider those around you. Unchecked power is poisonous. Eat the rich. F*ck the patriarchy. Free Palestine.
